ONYX NY/Northeast’s mission to educate, empower and explore is not only for members. Bar nights and other social events, fundraisers, demonstrations and educational opportunities are open to the public. Attending these events will expand your knowledge of kinks/fetishes, provide opportunities to interact with the ONYX brothers and other members of the leather community in our Chapter area.
Once you have attended a few events, you may decide that you would like to be a member of ONYX. As a member, you will have opportunities to participate in the planning and implementation of events, outreach to other leather organizations/communities, educations, fundraising for charitable organizations that support our communities, and participate with the other ONYX members in a more consistent and familial manner.
Membership Process
Members of the community who wish to join the chapter must apply to be a Pledge. Pledges are on line (participating in classes/events/activities as directed by the Pledge Master) for approximately six months. Prospective Pledges must attend a minimum of two ONYX events before their application will be considered. To be added to the mailing list and receive updates on ONYX events and the opening of the Recruitment Period, please complete the Information Form that follows. The ONYX Recruitment Period
Application: The application is available for submission from October 1, 2019 – November 15, 2019.
Interviews: Interviews with prospective pledges are conducted in November / December.
Acceptance: Pledge Applicants are informed in late December of their status as a member of the Pledge Line.
Initial Meeting: The Pledge class meets in early January to get to know each other and officially meet the Brothers.
First Pledge Class: The first Pledge class meeting is held in February.
ONYX Membership Q&A
“What happens during the Pledge process?”
To become a member, you must first apply and be accepted as a member of the Pledge Line. During the Pledge process, which lasts approximately six months, the Pledges are required to learn the history of ONYX and the leather community, leather protocol, expectations of ONYX men, and demonstrate proficiency to the members of the Chapter.
“What is the difference between a Full Member (brother) and Associate of ONYX?”
Gay, bi and transgendered men of color who successfully complete the Pledge process are accepted as Full Members (brothers). As such, the member can hold office and vote on issues. Dues for Full Members is $150/year. Full Members are allowed to wear the large back patch and small patches. Those who are eligible for Full Membership can also apply to be an Associate Member.
All others, including members that do not identify as gay, bi or transgendered men of color. This group includes women of color, transwomen, Caucasians and heterosexuals. All are welcome to join the organization as Associates, who are part of the organization but do not hold voting rights or the ability to hold an office. Dues for Associates is $100/year. Associates are allowed to wear a small patch only.
“How much time will I have to dedicate to the organization each month?”
Members typically dedicate approximately six hours each month for bar night and meetings. Additional events and committee work can add to the amount of time spent in a month.
